A lot of people move to this city to take advantage of the many job opportunities that Houston can provide. We want all our residents to have their best jobs and live their best lives, so we’ve created a list of resume tips for this week’s blog!

Applying for jobs in 2018 is less about having the right experience and more about standing out. The job market has never been more saturated, and that’s especially true in a massive city like Houston, TX. If you can stand out and you’ve got the right experience, you’ve got a good chance of landing your dream job. With that in mind, let’s dive into this week’s blog! When you’re done reading it, please be sure to share the link to this post with your friends and neighbors at your community of Greenway Plaza apartments.

Pay attention to design

You might not be applying to creative jobs, but your resume still needs to be designed well. Avoid Times New Roman as a font, and use a clean sans-serif instead. Also, consider adding a tiny bit of color to your resume, whether it’s in your name or in one the lines that separates each section of your work experience.

Add skills to the top of the page

You don’t want to promote the fact that you know how to use Excel or Word — everyone can do that these days. However, be sure to note any technical skills you may have, and do it near the top of your resume. If you’re going to grab the hiring manager’s attention, it’s going to happen in the top-third of your resume.

Create a story, not a list

Our next tip is one you probably haven’t heard before. Most people just list their job title, some bullet points about the position, and move on to the next one. Instead of doing that, try adding a line of text in between each job that explains why you moved on from each position. Not only will this capture the attention of hiring managers who aren’t used to seeing this, but it will help answer questions that they may have about your work history. Keep the sentences short, and make sure they’re flattering!

Leave dates out of it

There’s no reason to include your college or high school graduation date if you don’t want to. You don’t want hiring managers to immediately dismiss you because you’re too young or old, so don’t give them that opportunity! We also recommend leaving internships off of your resume unless they were truly transformative experience. Having an internship on your resume makes you look super young, and that’s usually not a good thing for hiring managers looking for experienced professionals.
